Volunteer Opportunity with the Young Leaders Against Violence

YLAV are accepting applications now through end of September. Hoping to recruit 20-25 students from different high schools that are looking for an after school opportunity to build advocacy and leadership skills. We work on organizing awareness events for Human Trafficking, Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Months. We also plan a legislative education event on an issue that impacts teens.

We meet twice monthly on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 PM. Meetings are held at the YWCA at 25 Sheldon Blvd SE in their new youth center. We provide bus tickets and dinner at meetings. October and November are spent on getting the students to know each, team building and developing their interests in social justice work. We use the Speak. Act. Change Curriculum from Break the Cycle for healthy relationship education for teens. In January we start planning our events and we finish up in May with a celebration of our successes. If students are interested, we can arrange opportunity for job shadowing in the summer at one of our partnering agencies (KCHD, Family Futures, YWCA, Safe Haven Ministries, Sexual Assault Prevention Action Team), we also will help students with resume building, letters of recommendation, or practicing interviewing skills.
